在英语中，eye 的实际意思远不止“眼睛”，但是所有其他的意思都直接或间接地与眼睛这个视觉器官有关，而且很多动词的动作也是借助眼睛来实现的，如 see，look，watch，peek 或 glimpse 等等。
当 eye 指视觉器官时，是面部上用来看东西的组织，如 open your eyes，意为“睁开眼睛”，lower your eyes，意为“眼睛朝下看”等；有时 eye 还可以指把线穿过的针头上的洞，意为“针鼻儿，针眼”。例如：
When she looked at him, her eyes were full of tears.
当她看着他时，眼里充满了泪水。
Her eyes slowly became accustomed to the dark.
她的眼睛慢慢地适应了黑暗。
借助眼睛这个器官，我们可以衍生丰富多彩的短语，有些是用 eye 的单数形式，有些用 eye 的复数形式 eyes，常见的主要有以下几种：
一、keep an/one's eye on sb/sth，意为“照看，留神”等，此时的 eye 用单数，例如：
Will you keep an eye on my children while I go to the toilet?
我上厕所时你能照看一下我的孩子吗？
二、have one's eye on，此时的 eye 也用单数，意为“想得到，想买到”等，例如：
She's had her eye on a shoulder bag for some time.
她想买一个肩包已经有一段时间了。
三、be all eyes，此时的 eye 用复数，意为“全神贯注地看，目不转睛”等，例如：
The children were all eyes as she opened the golden box.
当她打开金盒子时，孩子们目不转睛。
四、before/in front of one's (very) eyes，此时的 eye 用复数，意为“就在某人眼皮底下”等，例如：
After the crash, the car exploded before his very eyes.
车祸后，汽车在他眼前爆炸了。
五、make eyes at sb 或 give sb the eye，此时的 eye 用单数，意为“向某人抛媚眼”等，例如：
He's definitely giving you the eye!
他肯定是在向你眉目传情！
六、for sb's eyes only，此时的 eye 用复数，意为“只供某人读”等，例如：
The confidential documents are for your eyes only.
这些机密文件只准你一个人看。
七、only have eyes for sb 或 have eyes only for sb，此时的 eye 用复数，意为“只钟情于某人”等，例如：
The man only has eyes for the girl who helped him out at that time.
那个男人只钟情于那个当时帮助他摆脱困境的女孩。
类似的习语还有很多很多，然而有的时候 eye 却不意为“眼睛”，它还有一些抽象的意思，如意为“眼光，视角”等，表示看事情的特殊的方式，其中 have an eye for sth 中的 eye 就是“眼光”的意思。
Have an eye for sth，意为“对…有鉴赏力”，例如：
I don't have much of an eye for beauty, so I need you to help me pick the clothes.
我对美没有什么鉴赏力，所以我需要你帮我挑选衣服。
当 eye 表示抽象的眼力等时，常用作单数，例如：
He looked at the design with the eye of an engineer.
他以工程师的眼光审视这个设计。
He has an artist's eye for color.
